Diet and exercise go hand-in-hand. Do one without the other and you will struggle to reach your weight-loss goals. However, if you switch to a healthier diet as well as workout regularly, it won’t be long until you start to see the rewards of your hard work.

There are countless exercises you can perform to get fit and lose weight. Furthermore, you have a huge choice of exercise machines, ranging from treadmills to bikes and from rowing machines to cross trainers; all designed to help you get fit.

Be committed and you will achieve your weight-loss goals. The following suggestions are a good place to start:

Plan healthier meals

Avoid shopping for groceries daily. This will lead to temptation. Shop on a weekly or monthly basis and plan healthy meals in advance (it’ll become second nature once you get into the swing of things). Search for recipes online and find inspiring meals that are low in calories and high in vitamins and minerals.

Reduce fat

Try to cut fat out of your diet. Check the fat content and calorie content on packaged foods. Cook fresh food whenever possible. Remove the skin from chicken prior to cooking, trim fat from pork or bacon and buy good quality mince that contains minimal fat.

Reduce portion sizes

Gradually cut down on meal sizes. If you normally pile your plate nice and high, stop doing this and reduce the size of the portions. You’ll be amazed at how quickly your stomach adapts once you start feeding it smaller meals.

Eat slowly

Take your time during meals. Chew food thoroughly and never bolt your food down, as eating too quickly makes you want to eat more.  Consume food gradually and give it time to settle in your stomach. You’ll not only appreciate your meals more, you'll find you are eating less as a result.

Drink plenty of water

Try to drink plenty of water during the day and whenever you have a meal. Cut out fizzy drinks that are high in sugar. Top up with water and it can help suppress your appetite, enabling you to eat less. Water flushes toxins from the body. Enjoy it with your food and make sure you drink plenty when you are exercising.

These are just a few small steps to take if you want to support weight loss. Try them as part of your new exercise plan and you can become fighting fit this year.
