This argument is as old as the hills and I’ve seen conflicting advice put forward.

When, I first became interested in weight training whilst in my 20s, the received wisdom was that, if you wanted to add muscle, especially bulk, you lifted heavy weights for a small number of repetitions. Conversely, if you wanted to train for endurance, you used lighter weights, but did a lot more reps. On that basis, logic dictated that if you wanted to increase strength, but not add too much bulk, you lifted medium weights and did a medium number of reps!

As I said, I have seen advice which contradicts that, but most of the weight-training books I’ve read recently, and which claim to present up-to-date and authoritative advice, suggest that the old theory still holds good.

I’d be interested to hear your views on this! P.
